Anti inflammatory Elements Recognized As Treatment for Rheumatoid Arthritis

A recent article in Arthritis and Rheumatism cited the effects of knee joints injected with isothiocyanide – an element present in cruciferous vegetables. The inflammation was noted to decrease evidenced by less pronounced histological changes of inflammation in the synovium thus establishing the importance of cruciferous vegetables in a standard diet. Moreover, noting its direct effects of injecting intraarticularly raises a new concept in the development of potential injectable treatments for inflamed joints. Essential fatty acids – rich in the omega 3 type are also still currently advised for its anti inflammatory effects on joints again prompting us to implement diet alterations tailored to reduce the correlating symptoms of pain, stiffness, and swelling in patients afflicted with inflammatory arthritis, whether it be grossly observed or at the level of the synovium.
