Obesity – Still Number One Risk Factor for Osteoarthritis

exercise-obesity_SS_88671487_091813-617x416Obesity is still the most common trigger setting off the cascade of events leading to osteoarthritis in the weight bearing joints. Conversely, removing the excess mechanical load weighing on joints allows for reparative mechanisms and elimination of the inflammatory process which occurs locally within the synovium via cytokines. This heralds a greater need for discussion of nutritional means to achieve therapeutic measures. This works to not only alleviate inflammatory mechanisms at work locally in the synovium, but primarily to reduce weight acting as a mechanical load inducing shear forces on the cartilage triggering reactive architectural changes such as desiccation and joint space narrowing as well.
